Cleanliness

 Cleanliness is a very important habit used in our daily lives. It is taught by our parents since our childhood. When we talk about cleanliness we might just think about keeping ourselves and our houses clean but almost nobody is even bothered to look for a dustbin for throwing garbage. Urination in open makes our environment dirty and foul smelling, spitting here and there again makes our surroundings dirty, we throw garbage here and there without thinking that others might step on it. Then germs and flies are attracted to it and carry the germs wherever they go. Then they sit on our food, and when we eat it the germs go inside our body resulting in dangerous diseases like Cholera , Typhoid fever, Malaria, Diarrhoea  etc.  Some diseases are also caused due to air and water, because of the pollutants thrown by the factories in the air and water without treating it in waste treatment plants. Factories are also a major contributing source to water and air pollution. Illegal dumping of hazardous chemicals, gases, contaminated water in waterways damages the marine life and our environment also, and sometimes this negligence results in harmful diseases like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Asthma,  and lung cancer etc. from air pollution Dysentery, Polio, Trachoma etc. ( Trachoma can lead to visual impairment or blindness) are some diseases that occur because of dirty water. T o prevent these type of diseases and for keeping our environment clean we must follow these steps and don't forget those 4 R's Refuse, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

* Reduce the use of single use plastics.

* Do not litter here and there.

* Do not spit here and there.

* Put off the lights when not in use.

*Put off the flowing taps.

*Use public transport or car pool while travelling.

Acid, bases and salts(QNA)

 



Q1 What is an Acid-base indicator? Give one example.

Ans There are some special substances that have different colors in acidic and basic mediums. They are called acid base indicators. Litmus is a natural indicator obtained from Lichens.

 

Q2 Name one each of acidic and basic substances.

Ans Carbonic acid(H2CO3) is one of the acidic substances, baking soda is one of the bases.

 

Q How can carbon di oxide be prepared from an acid?

Ans The reaction of sodium carbonate with sulphuric acid is used to prepare carbon di oxide in laboratory.

 

Q4 Give two examples each of strong acids and weak acids.

Ans the two examples of strong acids are sulphuric acid(H2So4), Nitric Acid (HNO3) and two examples of weak acids are citric acid and lactic acid.

 

Q5 Why does the base applied to your skin give relief from an ant bite?

Ans When an ant stings, it injects formic acid into the skin. This irritates the skin baking soda or calamine solutions (Zinc carbonate) is used to neutralize the acid and provide relief.

 

Q6 Give two main usage each of the following.

 

a) Sulphuric acid: Automobile batteries, detergent manufacturing

b) Hydrochloric acid: Chemical manufacturing such as glue, to purify salts

c)Nitric acid: To prepare aqua Regia, to extract some metals from there ores.

 

Q7 Some acids are dangerous, others are not. Explain , giving examples.

Ans: Acids obtained from minerals are mineral acids. examples are hydrochloric acid(HCl), Sulphuric acid(H2So4),Nitric acid(HNO3), Carbonic acid(H2Co3). Most mineral acids are strong. They can cause serious skin burns.

Acids obtained from living things such as plants and animals are organic acids. Most organic acids are weak. Examples are citric acid, lactic acid, malic acid and carbonic acid etc.

  

Q8 What are bases? What are their physical properties?

Ans Substances such as baking soda that are bitter in taste and feel soapy to touch are bases. A base has chemically opposite properties as compared to an acid. Thus, a base can neutralize acid's acidity.


Q9 How can we make soap in laboratory?

Ans Take 20 ml of castor oil in beaker other oils such as coconut oil can also be used. Prepare sodium hydroxide solution (NaoH) by dissolving half a tea spoon of caustic soda in about 20 ml of water mix the oil and sodium hydroxide solution. Heat the mixture continuously and let it boil for 10 to 15 minutes continuously. The reaction that occurs

Oil + NaoH= Soap + Glycerin

To separate the soap from the soap mixture. Add a tea spoon full of salt to the beaker and stir. On cooling, solid soap separates out as a crust on the top of the solution.

Natural Oxygen Cylinders - Trees

A tree is like a saint and great giver to human kind. it is a living being and act as a natural oxygen cylinder as we know that trees inhale carbon -di-oxide and give out oxygen which we breath. Not only that trees make our environment pollution free and reduce global warming. Life is impossible without trees but after knowing this all we are still destroying forests and cutting down trees and after that all if those homeless animals roam on our streets. we complain about their presence. Man has always been exploiting mother nature for his selfish interest. It is startling that we humans cut 2.47 million trees every day and planting only 5000 trees. On an average it takes 5 minutes to cut a tree but 10 to 20 years to grow. If this continues further then atmosphere will have only toxic gases and smog. We may need oxygen dispenser for breathing. Is it viable? Average life of human being will be reduced to few years. To this very day what distinguishes human from the rest of living kingdom is intelligence. Still this intelligent creature is weakening its own existence by exploiting and disturbing the fine ecological balance.

Polynomials

Quick Revision Polynomials


1. Polynomials of degrees 1, 2 and 3 are called linear, quadratic and cubic polynomials respectively.

2. A quadratic polynomial in $x$ with real coefficients is of the form $a x^{2}+b x+c,$ where $a, b$, $c$ are real numbers with $a \neq 0$

3. The zeroes of a polynomial $p(x)$ are precisely the $x$ -coordinates of the points, where the graph of $y=p(x)$ intersects the $x$ -axis.


4. A quadratic polynomial can have at most 2 zeroes and a cubic polynomial can have at most 3 zeroes.


5. If $\alpha$ and $\beta$ are the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial $a x^{2}+b x+c,$ then

$\alpha+\beta=-\frac{b}{a}, \quad \alpha \beta=\frac{c}{a}$


6. If $\alpha, \beta, \gamma$ are the zeroes of the cubic polynomial $a x^{3}+b x^{2}+c x+d=0,$ then

$\alpha+\beta+\gamma=\frac{-b}{a} \alpha \beta+\beta \gamma+\gamma \alpha=\frac{c}{a}$

and $\alpha \beta \gamma=\frac{-d}{a}$

7. The division algorithm states that given any polynomial $p(x)$ and any non-zero polynomial $g(x)$, there are polynomials $q(x)$ and $r(x)$ such that

p(x)=g(x) q(x)+r(x)

where $\quad r(x)=0$ or degree $r(x)<$ degree $g(x)$

Theorem 1.1 (Euclid’s Division Lemma) : Given positive integers a and b,

there exist unique integers q and r satisfying a = bq + r, 0 ≤ r < b.


Theorem 1.2 (Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic) : Every composite number

can be expressed ( factorised) as a product of primes, and this factorisation is

unique, apart from the order in which the prime factors occur.


Theorem 1.3: Let $p$ be a prime number. If $p$ divides $a^{2},$ then $p$ divides a, where $a$ is a positive integer.


Theorem 1.4: $\sqrt{2}$ is irrational.


Theorem 1.5: Let $x$ be a rational number whose decimal expansion terminates.

Then $x$ can be expressed in the form $\frac{p}{q},$ where $p$ and $q$ are coprime, and the

prime factorisation of $q$ is of the form $2^{\circ} 5^{m},$ where $n, m$ are non-negative integers.

Theorem 1.6: Let $x=\frac{p}{q}$ be a rational mamber, such that the prime factorisation of $q$ is of the form $2^{n} 5^{\text {" }},$ where $n, m$ are non-negative integers. Then $x$ has a

decimal expansion which terminates.

Theorem 1.7: Let $x=\frac{p}{q}$ be a rational number, such that the prime factorisation of $q$ is not of the form $2^{n} 5$ ", where $n, m$ are non-negative integers. Then, $x$ has a decimal expansion which is non-terminating repeating (recurring).

So we can conclude that the decimal expansion of every rational number is either terminating or non-terminating repeating.
